Abstract
In this article I analyse some scientific works by Tullio De Mauro on spoken language. According to his theoretical position, the linguistic codes allow the realization of a variable number of distinctive features in relation to what the situation requires. The study of spoken usage exemplifies very well this virtual variety in the formal realization of signs and shows how and to what extent the formation of relevant semiotic features is deeply intertwined with the substantial aspects of the audio-vocal communication.
