Abstract
From Early Modern to the French Revolution the act of eating together has been transformed into a basic institution of the court society. This study presents a few scenes of such a cultural device in order to show its double work both as a means to impose a norm under the straight control of social and political power, and as an occasion to develop what modern philosophy, at that same time, begun to call the «individual subject».
