Abstract
The global spread of the pandemic is the main challenge facing urban life in the 21 st century. The article questions the role of the two main traits of cities – size and density – in intensifying contagion and in other possible future pandemics. The response lies in the Leviathan State, as is happening today, which is compared with the possible mobilisation of civil society based on voluntary coordination, inspired by David Hume.
