Abstract
The author briefly describes how in the history of mankind, man's capacity to influence and control the natural environment has been improved by organisational progress. He then explains how the digital revolution of the 1970s has become the focus of social life and of the world's economy starting from the 1980s. Now that the first digital revolution is behind us, we not only realise the distance covered and the deep change it has brought to our lives, we also sense how, by removing material bonds, the new technology is creating a completely new living environment.
