Abstract
In the current focus on climate change we have lost sight perhaps of another important global problem: that of the loss of biodiversity. Yet in many respects it is as important a matter of concern, for the fundamental basis of our economies and our livelihoods lies in the ecosystems that provide the natural services for agriculture and provision of raw materials that are essential for our survival. Some efforts are now being made to raise the profile of this problem at the global level. Action can be taken to halt the losses being experienced but it will take time, effort, resources and a political will.
