Abstract
The recent destruction of works of cultural heritage in the Middle East by Isis militias, suggests a comparison between the Western and Eastern forms of iconoclasm in modern times. If in Islamic cultures iconoclasm seeks legitimacy in religious texts, confirming its opposition to the secular world of image, in Western countries too iconoclasm was often practiced during revolutionary conflicts and by avant-garde artists against the socalled society of image and spectacle.
