It is in cities that the battle for sustainable development will be won or lost. Projections indicate that almost two thirds of the global population will live in urban areas by 2050, and about 60 per cent of the area expected to be urban in the next decades has not yet been built. What should our future cities be like, according to Goal 11 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development? We asked Professor John Thwaites, the Australian member of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, the network that helped design and now supports the goals and targets to be achieved in order to make cities more sustainable.
