Abstract
This article focuses on the origins and the developments of Italian national accounting and analyses how it influenced policy-making during the Twentieth Century. As it happened in other countries, in Italy, from the First World War to the 1960s, the role of economic research centres, both public and private, grew significantly. In this period, national accounting acquired a strategic influence, making.mediating between the business world and political elites, eventually exerting a direct influence on policy.
