Abstract

The article proposes some considerations about current trends in studies on the history of libraries in Italy. In the past, Italian scholars had concentrated their attention almost exclusively on the history of book collections, on collectors, on the provenance and development of the library collections. In recent years, attention has shifted to the use of libraries, to relationship between readers and libraries, to what really happened in libraries, to the evolution of the professional role of librarians.
