Abstract
Starting from a volume recently published, the essay retraces the profile of Nilde Iotti, promoter of the public opening of the Italian Library of the Chamber of Deputies. In particular, her political legacy is valorized here, related to an idea of culture as an instrument of liberty, but also of collective emancipation and substantial democracy. The modernization process, interpreted by Iotti, is emphasized, in addition, by the recognition of female political citizenship and by women’s participation in the strengthening of Republican institutions
