Abstract
This article deals with a delicate issue for the historiographical «narration», because it is very impressive on a broad learned public. Historiographical evaluation of the medieval institutions swings between some categories of the modern public law and some categories of the pre-codification law. The essay aims to offer some reasons for reflection even for revising traditional judgements on alleged «turning points» that in some cases seem overstated
