Abstract

Looking at the history of Napoleon Bonaparte’s reception among his supporters and opponents around the globe, this article offers new insights on his changing legacy in modern political culture. In particular, it illustrates how the evaluation of his image – not only as a politician but also as a charismatic human symbol – has evolved from the nineteenth century to the present day, in accordance with political and cultural change.
