Abstract
The Author analyses the relationship between centre and periphery in precolonial Africa. Within every centralised political formation, centre-periphery relations are organised according to recurrent political, administrative and military patterns. The political and moral centre is the seat of power and of the ruler's charisma. These are diffused towards the periphery, but their diffusion is impeded by material obstacles that hinder the continuity and homogeneity of the political message.
