Abstract
The review essay offers a survey of recent work dealing with the relationship between consumerism and women's citizenship. The author adopts a comparative approach, and analyzes texts concerning both US and European history. The review is built around three themes: the interpretation of consumer culture as a female public sphere; the forms of political activism carried out by female consumers; and the definition of consumption as both a right and a duty of citizenship.
