Abstract
This review essay traces recent developments in the study of Italian colonialism, identifying two main strands of analysis. Influenced by postcolonial and cultural studies and pursued mainly abroad, one strand centers on the analysis of discourses, images, and memories. A second strand, characterizing research in Italy, has focused on relaying circumscribed, yet important facets of Italian colonial rule.
