Abstract
The essay outlines the development of social history in western European historiography since its inception in the 1920s. It pays attention primarily to French historiography and to the "Annales". A survey of the main fields of current research on early-modern Europe is also offered, concentrating on the reawakening of politics and political interest in Italian and French scholarship.
