Abstract

The aim of the first part of this paper is to analyse the various meanings of the concept of animal welfare, on the basis of the distinction between physiological, ecological and ethological welfare, and then to compare these ideas and definitions with the real conditions in which animals actually live. In the second part, the most important ethical and philosophical theories about "animal rights and human obligations" are expounded, along with some of the laws concerning the protection of animals.
