Abstract
The paper aims to formulate a new interpretation of the section of the Phenomenology of Spirit in which Hegel describes the rise of consciousness through the dialectical relationship between master and slave. The author's hypothesis is that in these pages Hegel is not describing a link between two different consciences - as they are usually seen - but a dialectic that takes place in the subject, between two different forms of consciousness, one emerging from desire and the other rising from the formulation of intentions through the thought.
