Abstract
The essay is the opening lecture delivered by Karl Löwith in 1936 at the Japanese University of Sendai. The German text has never been published, whereas a Japanese translation appeared in 1938 in the journal "Bunka". The development of the idea of Europe in German philosophy of history is the central topic of the paper, which also deals with Hegelian and post-Hegelian philosophy of history in general.
