Abstract
The article takes into consideration the question of secularism within the context of Islamic tradition compared with the Western modern tradition. Discussing the reflexions made on this topics by some Arab authors of the last century (Abderraziq, Abu Zayd and Benslama), the article concludes suggesting that the improvement of a historical and philological account of the textual tradition of Islam could constitute an important contribution toward the diffusion of a secular attitude within those members of the Islamic community who live in the Western countries.
