Abstract

The first part of this article focuses on a broad range of effects that growing inequalities can have on the quality of democracy, on economic development and on social relations. In the second part, an argument is advanced in favour of the reduction of inequalities by appeal to the way in which political, economic, social and ethical reasons are connected. If we accept the idea of democratic equality as axiomatic, we can infer a theorem of social fairness, centered on a version of prioritarianism.
