Abstract
This article provides a concise overview of the ongoing academic debate surrounding European citizenship. The discussion has predominantly taken a comparative approach, with European citizenship often analyzed in relation to national citizenship, particularly through the lens of the social-democratic model. This focus is largely motivated by the role of the national social contract, which has proven to be the most effective and successful political framework for fostering trust and solidarity among citizens. Consequently, scholars aim to explore the nature of European citizenship and its relationship to national citizenship by examining their respective rights and obligations
