Abstract
The essay focuses on Gramsci’s reflection, developed during his incarceration, about the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern age. The historiographic investigation relies on the conceptualisation of several political categories proposed by Gramsci in his Prison Notebooks. These categories, if one looks at them from a comparative/contrastive perspective along different historical contexts, can prove to be helpful to analyse contemporary dynamics.
