Abstract
The essay discusses the republican model of political philosophy elaborated by Philip Pettit in his book "Republicanism". Against Isaiah Berlin' distinction between negative and positive liberty, Pettit proposes the concept of "liberty as non-domination" as republican foundation of a democratic government. The essay maintains that Pettit, in his critique of modern liberalism, does not discuss the question of political modernity and misunderstands the role of Thomas Hobbes in the foundation of modern individualism.
