Abstract

Populism is the exacerbated expression of the ambiguity of people's place within democratic institutions, particularly at times where the political systems do not function properly, and it is the indication of a democratic malaise that political actors and citizens would do well to take seriously. It is a valid and timely reminder that democracy is not a given, but is instead a permanently renewed construct.
