Abstract
The essay retraces Nicola Matteucci's intellectual path from the viewpoint of his discussion on the concepts of State, government, civil society within the field of the history of political doctrines. In a dialectical confrontation with the positions of the major liberal thinkers of the XX century - from Croce to Popper, Hayek, Nozick and Habermas - the Author analyzes Matteucci's concept of State, from Bodin to the present eclipse of sovereignty.
