Abstract

Moving from Francis Bacon's words «To me, the mystery of painting today is how can appearance be made», this essay tries to analyse what Bacon interprets as the accidental and at the same time inevitable appearing of images in his paintings. The analysis is carried out by referring to the procedures of composition of some of his paintings and portraits.
