Abstract
After a short summary on the history of AI, I discuss the difference between symbolic and sub-symbolic AI, also in relation to another, independent distinction: weak AI vs strong AI. This brings into sharp relief the role played by Orazio Miglino in redefining how psychology and AI can support each other, and the value of his recommendations on how psychologists could (and should) approach their professional role in relation to technological transformations. I conclude these reflections outlining two concrete examples of Miglino’s influence in this area: his mandate as President of the Italian Association of Cognitive Science (AISC) from 2011 to 2013, and his key role in inspiring a new section of this very same journal, Strumenti Intelligenti
