Abstract
In this contribution I provide a picture of what Domenico Parisi called Digital Environments where he imagined everyone could understand all kinds of world phenomena by interacting with computer simulations. I look back at our early attempt to develop something very close to his idea of a Digital Environment and then I revise that idea in light of my subsequent experiences in the field of educational game development. I conclude by focusing on what I think is the root principle of Digital Environments: the idea that learning should happen by means of a particular kind of rewarding experience very similar to what gamers find when playing videogames
