Abstract

This note puts forward some general remarks on forecasting which, we think, are relevant in light of the ever growing popularity of machine learning technologies. Our goal is to illustrate, by way of examples, that in order to take the most of the opportunities opened up by those technologies while limiting our exposure to the risks they bear, we must focus on a set of severe limitations of algorithmic forecasting.
