Chatbots to promote the mental health in university students. A narrative review

Abstract

Stress and academic difficulties can negatively impact the mental health in college students. Among the different solutions that can be adopted to promote mental health in university students, the use of chatbots for psychological support emerged. The objective of the narrative review is to evaluate the effects of chatbots to support mental health in university students. Furthermore, we analyze their characteristics and examine their potential. An overview of the newest evidemce-based contributions was conducted. The implications for both research and clinical practice were highlighted and guidelines for future outcomes and application were described. The data collected demonstrates the effectiveness and suitability of chatbots in promoting the mental health of university students. Chatbots, with appropriate optimizations, can become a valuable tool for promoting the mental well-being of university students and encouraging access to psychological support
