Abstract
While early utopian ideals imagined automation as a solution to rid us of the drudgery of mundane work, the reality is proving to be more challenging. We’re witnessing how, once habitual, Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, with their rapid advancements and widespread use, are no longer just support tools but potential substitutes for human functions. This calls for the establishment of ethical guidelines in their design. A few questions arise: How do we ensure that AI respects human values in contexts where its influence is dominant? How do we prevent users’ misuse? Most importantly, how can we ensure that AI augments our capabilities without diminishing our value and sense of purpose? In our considerations, a crucial aspect of reshaping the human-AI relationship is shifting from an integration process to a collaborative model, highlighting active participation by both sides. This guarantees that humans retain their position as ultimate decision-makers. These conditions are vital not only for the practical implications of operational processes but also for mental well-being. Drawing from the psychology of agency, we’ll emphasize the necessity to promote a technology design approach that preserves Meaningful Human Control.
