Abstract

The paper deals with the debate on memory which has characterized the XXth century. It pays particular attention to the notion of collective memory and to the relationship between memory and culture. With regard to the notion of collective memory, the paper discusses the plurality of collective memories, their differentiation and conflictuality; with regard to the relationship between memory and culture, it stresses the ambivalence of modern culture with regard to memory and the role of mass media in shaping today's public memories.
