Abstract
This article is a brief introduction to the theme of Gypsy begging and to the three articles which follow. The abrogation of mendicancy as a crime in Italy in 1996 can be seen as a "victory" for the Gypsies, who for centuries have defended and illegally practised it. The case stimulates reflection on the possibilities for constructing an intercultural jurisprudence.
