Abstract
In this note it is argued that an evaluation of the scientific performance of individual researchers or academic institutions that relies almost exclusively on publications in the leading journals is far from satisfactory. It ignores the serious methodological problems of mainstream economics, it discriminates against non orthodox approaches and penalizes the analyses linked to a specific institutional context. It follows that only articulated methods of evaluation that take adequately into account the various methods and approaches are compatible with the progress of the discipline.
