Abstract
In this work, we propose the results of an empirical survey carried out on two networks of firms. The data have been utilised in order to achieve two main goals. First, the study of the relevance of the different variables in defining the motivations and the characterisation of inter-firm relationships. Second, the definition of two case studies. The main interesting and original elements of the work are related to the fact that we take into account learning and communication processes, the effects of the interaction between the different competences of the firms involved, and the modalities by which coordination of processes is carried out. The results largely support this choice, showing not only as these elements are relevant in determining firm choices and strategies, but also as their analysis permits a more complete interpretation of the working mechanisms and performances of networks.
