Abstract
This memory, according to EU guidelines described in the White Paper 2011, focuses its attention on the quantification of the overall energy required to build and to operate an infrastructure. The issue of energy in transport has been analyzed only partially until now, focusing on the operating costs (consumption of vehicles) and neglecting the energy required for the construction of the infrastructure and the vehicles themselves. The methodology is described and applied on a multimodal Italian corridor (road and rail between Brescia and Milan), demonstrating the effectiveness of the method and its importance for a proper evaluation of policy alternatives in the transport sector.
