Abstract

This paper reviews some initiatives undertaken by Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (Agcm) that have had a positive impact on environmental sustainability. The Agcm has actively promoted competitive dynamics in key sectors for the green transition, such as the circular economy and sustainable mobility. Antitrust enforcement ensures more competitive markets which incentivize the development of innovative and sustainable solutions. The Agcm has intervened to prevent unfair commercial practices from distorting sustainable consumers’ choices, by contrasting greenwashing. Ensuring that consumers receive accurate information and are shielded from deceptive claims, incentivizes companies to develop genuinely sustainable products. Overall, the enforcement activity of the Agcm illustrates how competition and consumer protection can play a crucial role in promoting sustainability goals.
