Abstract

The aim of the new regulation of the retail industry enacted in 1998 was to liberalise one of the more protected sectors of the Italian economy. Though with some ambiguity, it was a clear depart from the past. Regional authorities, which were in charge of completing the new regulatory framework, did not move in the same direction and enacted laws that restrict competition, reintroducing barriers to new large stores. If they confirm this approach in their administrative activity, the Italian retail industry will not be able to offer consumers the services they want and to continue to put pressure on its suppliers, stimulating their efficiency and counteracting inflationary pressures.
