Abstract
The Constitutional Court’s ruling of May 31, 2022 established that the child bears a double surname unless the parents agree otherwise by choosing between the mother’s and the father’s surname. The approval of a more comprehensive regulation cannot be delayed any longer and useful suggestions may be provided by foreign regulations. The vast majority of European states long ago abandoned the male-centered surname by adopting new rules consistent with the need to ensure the effective equality of parents and suitable to protect the child’s right to personal identity
