Abstract

In the paper the author charts the relations between different concepts of relevance - theoretical, practical, logical, probabilistic relavence - in order to determine which ones can be most fruitfully employed in the analysis of the notions of probative and causal relevance. The paper starts with some general remarks about the meaning of the terms «relevant» and «relevance» in ordinary language, and then moves on to an enquiry based on research conducted in the fields of logic, semiotics, proof theory and epistemology.
