Abstract
The essay examines the following themes: phenomena that cause elementary certainties to crumble (living together in a multiethnic society, biotechnology) and reactions that appeal to human nature; legislative decisions on immigration; cultural relativism; the admonitions of the Catholic Church with reference to 'nonnegotiable principles' and 'relativism'; democracy and relativism of political values according to Kelsen; the linkage of relativism and unavailable principles in contemporary constitutionalism; 'non-negotiable principles' and constitutionally unavailable principles; possibilities and limits of constitutional law.
