Abstract

The paper describes the results of a study that involved 6 Science & Technology Parks (STPs) operating in Northern Italy. The focus of the research is on the role of these STPs (most of them promoted by local governments) as innovators for the territory. Specifically, the comparative analysis concerns the effectiveness of the technology transfer projects realized, as well as their limitations. As first, some historical notes on the origin and evolution of STPs, in general and specifically in Italy, and a characterization of different types of STPs are reported. Finally, suggestions to enhance their contribution to the economic development of local areas are provided.
