Abstract
The crisis of the journalistic professions calls for a reflexion that goes beyond the immediate prospects tied to the conversion from paper to digital. In fact it is the whole idea of information as the organization of a day in world life as a montage of news that is in question, in a moment in which information in quantitative terms is redundant and comes from a huge variety of possible sources. There is a third definition of information, though, that may help us in thinking the future of journalists, that due to Gregory Bateson: «a difference that makes a difference». In order to recognize which are the informations that really make a difference, professionals are still necessary, possibly more than ever.
