Abstract

Pope Francis’ constant concern for «existential peripheries» has found particular concreteness in his way of communicating. In both his verbal and non-verbal expression, he has chosen a simpler, more meaningful and compassionate style, characterized by the incorporation of the idea and practice of «tenderness» as a communicative key. He does not soften his language, trying to sugarcoat or minimize the seriousness of life’s dramatic events. On the contrary, the Holy Father uses the concept of «tenderness» as an attitude that allows him to come down to the level of life’s weakest and most wounded. This is what makes his message understandable to them, and to those making decisions at various social, political and economic levels. In this way, he appeals both to people’s emotions and to their rationality.
