Abstract

In recent decades, the phenomenon of population ageing has become a priority for national and international institutions. One of the tools put in place to address the challenges of population ageing is the concept of active ageing (Aa), which has been implemented in Europe through the Regional implementation strategy (Ris) of the United nations Madrid international plan of action on ageing (Mipaa) (2002). As the full implementation of the Mipaa/Ris strategy depends on the progressive adoption of appropriate regulatory, financial and governmental instruments by public decision-makers at both national and regional levels, the issue of mainstreaming ageing (Mipaa Commitment n. 1) is of particular relevance. The article provides an overview of the existing initiatives in Italy at national and regional level for the adoption of regulatory instruments and policy coordination for Aa, highlighting the main gaps that have emerged. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the policy objectives identified in the research activities of the project «National multilevel co-managed coordination of active ageing policies in Italy», which could help to fill these gaps.
