Abstract
According to two studies devoted to Italy (Lombardy) and to seven European countries, in the current economic crisis unemployed people are exposed to significant social disaffiliation processes. Institutions that compensate the job loss both in economic and social terms, such as the family in Southern Europe, are increasingly inadequate, although they are somehow adapting to the crisis. Investment in public employment services might prove effective, as shown by the Lombardy experience.
