Abstract

The article focuses on the role played by the Christian denominations in the process of design and implementation of the segregationist regime in South Africa until the later phase of political and social change that led to the abolition of apartheid and the resulting resolution of the civil conflict, thus allowing the country to rejoin the Commonwealth after leaving it due to the introduction of racial legislation. The growing availability of sources today strengthens awareness of how the positions of the Churches, in some cases conflicting, have influenced political choices and moral orientations of several institutional actors toward apartheid.
