Abstract
The attacks of 11 September 2001 in the United States prompted an international backlash against terrorism. Spain did not hesitate to support the Bush administration in its personal fight against terror as it had, for decades, also experienced domestic terrorism at the hands of Eta’s and as such, it hoped that collaboration would be beneficial in countering the main security threat. This article discusses the evolution of terrorist threats in Spain, during the period prior to 9/11, the consequences of 9/11 regarding the fight against Jihadism, and the 2004 March 11 attacks in Madrid, as well as the consequences, from the social and political perspectives.
