Abstract

Between January and February 1946, the weekly paper «Oggi» published a serialised reportage titled "Ghestapo". It was a shortened version of the homonymous text published by Rizzoli in June 1946. The original version had been published in French, in Switzerland in 1945. The account was presented as the anonymous testimony (probably fake) of a Shoah survivor talking of his experience in the Warsaw ghetto and in Auschwitz. The story draws both on the deceitful voices circulating during the extermination and on factual data that seems to be taken from the "Auschwitz Protocols" (VrbaWetzler Report). The article contextualizes the (false) testimony within a broader reflection on some historiographic themes such as the role of the witness in the representation of the Shoah, the veracity of the testimony, the representation of different groups in the deportation and the limitations of silent on the Jewish deportation in the early year of post-war in Italy.
